Race Series & Events

We host a variety of competitive and non-competitive events throughout the year for all fitness levels and interests, including: bicycle rides, youth and adult triathlons, road races varying from 1-mile, 5K, and 10K distances, and trail races.

  • Sand Plum Bicycle Classic
    June 5-6, 2021

    Saturday, June 5: Family Ride & Ice Cream Social

    • Come-and-go event at the Salt City Splash north parking lot from 5:30-7 p.m.
    • Families of all ages are invited to enjoy a closed course 5K (3.1-mile) ride throughout Carey Park, along with complimentary bike checks and youth helmets (while supplies last) from our sponsors, Harley’s Bicycles.
    • Fee: $10/family – includes ride and ice cream social
    • Youth and adult Sand Plum shirts are available to purchase for $10 through May 19. Add to cart at registration check-out.

    Sunday, June 6: Sand Plum Bicycle Classic Ride

    • Course distance options: 14-mile, 28-mile, 50-mile. NEW in 2021 – the 28-mile and 50-mile races feature gravel options for those who choose to cycle off-course. Portions of the ride are along US Bicycle Route 76, a cross-country bicycle route that connects Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, and Virginia.
    • Packet pick-up times are available during the Ice Cream Social/Family Ride in the north parking lot of Salt City Splash in Carey Park from 5:30-7 p.m., as well as on event day Sunday, June 6 from 7-8 a.m. at the Oz Breezeway on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.
    • Start time: 8 a.m. at Oz Breezeway on the Kansas State Fairgrounds
    • Fee: $25 – includes shirt, refreshments at SAG stops, lunch post-ride, and Saturday night Ice Cream Social/Family Ride. Have your family join you at Saturday night’s event for only $5! Select the add-on at online registration checkout.

    Proceeds from this event benefits the Friends of the Trail fund at the Hutchinson Community Foundation. This fund supports the walking/cycling trails in Reno County.

  • Smallville 5K & Super Hero 1-Mile

    It’s a bird! It’s a plan! It’s YOU racing through Downtown Hutchinson as a part of the Smallville 5K & Super Hero 1-mile fun run! Our race starts and finishes in DCI Park, 2nd & Main in Downtown Hutchinson.

    5K participants will enjoy a chip-timed event with official awards. The 1-mile fun run/walk is an untimed event. Both races are open to runners and walkers of all ages.

    Event Day Schedule:

    • 7 – 8 a.m: Registration for the Smallville 5K and 1-mile Superhero Fun Run/Walk, DCI Park (2nd & Main)
    • 8 a.m: 1-mile Superhero Fun Run/Walk begins
    • 8:30 a.m: Smallville 5K begins

  • Salty Dog Triathlon
    August 7, 2021

    • Event distances: 400-meter swim at Salt City Splash Aquatic Center; 10.5-mile bike (5 loops) around Carey Park Golf Course, 5K run along the Jim Martinez Trail.
    • Individual and team options available.
    • Event is chip-timed and on a closed course inside Carey Park. All finishers receive medals and are eligible for age-group awards.
    • Packet pick-up information and the timeline will be provided prior to race week via social media and participant email.
    • Fee: $55/individual and $110/team
    • Start Time: 7 a.m.

    Friday, August 6: 

    1-5 p.m.: Packet Pick-Up & Registration at Hutch Rec Downtown, 17 E. 1st (across from the Fox Theatre in Downtown Hutchinson)

     

    Saturday, August 7:

    5 a.m.: Carey Park will be closed to traffic. Please refer to the Parking Information below for more details on where to park your vehicle on event morning.

    5:15-6:45 a.m.: Salty Dog packet pick-up, check-in, and number marking at the Registration Tent (this year’s registration tent is located directly south of the railroad tracks as you enter the park from South Plum). PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE MARKED AND HAVE CORRESPONDING TIMING CHIP! ALL TEAM MEMBERS MUST BE MARKED!

    5:30-6:30 a.m.: Complimentary bicycle checks with Harley’s Bicycles inside the Splash parking lot gazebo (Please note: Local participants may drop their bicycles off at Harley’s Bicycles the remainder of this week to receive the complimentary bike check. This alleviates long lines on race day!

    6:45 a.m. (as time allows): Swimming warm-ups inside Salt City Splash for Salty Dog participants

    7 a.m.: Salty Dog Triathlon starts! (Distances Include: 400-meter swim; 10.5-mile bike; 5K run). All finishers will receive a finisher’s medal!

    Following the Salty Dog, an awards ceremony will take place on Plum Street, adjacent to the Finish Line. The following age-group awards will be handed out:

    Individuals: Overall Male Finisher & Overall Female Finisher; 1st-3rd place Male and 1st-3rd place Female in various age categories (19 & Under; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60 & Older)

    Teams: Overall Team Awards, 1st-3rd place teams

     

  • Salty Pup Triathlon
    August 7, 2021

    • Event distances: 100-meter swim at Salt City Splash Aquatic Center; 4.2-mile bike (2 loops) around Carey Park Golf Course, 1-mile run along the Jim Martinez Trail.
    • For youth ages 5-15 yrs old.
    • Event is chip-timed and on a closed course inside Carey Park. All finishers receive medals and are eligible for age-group awards.
    • Packet pick-up information and the timeline will be provided prior to race week via social media and participant email.
    • Fee: $35
    • Event Start Time: 9 a.m. (following the Salty Dog Triathlon)

    8:45 a.m.: Brief parent/participant meeting with Salty Pup coordinators (on the lawn just north of the Salty Pup bike transition/parking area)

    8:55 a.m.: Participants line up inside Salt City Splash Aquatic Center

    9 a.m.: Salty Pup Triathlon begins (Distances include: 100-meter swim; 4.2-mile bike; 1-mile run). All finishers receive a finisher’s medal. 

    Following the Salty Pup, an awards ceremony will take place on Plum Street, adjacent to the Finish Line. The following age-group awards will be handed out: Overall Male & Female, as well as male and female age group awards for 1st-3rd place in the following age divisions: 9 & Under; 10-12; 13-15.

    Salty Pup Parents/Guardians/Spectators: We will have various spectator locations for you to watch and cheer on your child on the swim, bike, run, and finish portions of the course. Please respect the volunteers and coordinators and DO NOT block the transition areas! This includes the main bike transition area. We ask that children are responsible for putting on their own shoes, drying off, etc, and coordinators will be there to assist as needed. Parents are not allowed to bike or run on the course with their children. This can result in disqualification.

  • Salt City 5K/10K

    Race through the Salt City as a part of this year’s Salt City 5K/10K races, presented by Salt City Brewery.

    The 10K event starts at 8 a.m., while the 5K event starts at 8:15 a.m. in front of Salt City Brewery, 514 N. Main. Runners and walkers welcome. Participants will be officially chip-timed and eligible for age-group awards. All participants receive a medal and shirt.

    Additional race details will be e-mailed to participants the week of the event.

    The Salt City 5K/10K races are a featured event as part of the Hutch Fall Fest, taking place Oct. 1-2 in Downtown Hutchinson. More information about Hutch Fall Fest weekend events can be found here: https://www.hutchchamber.com/downtown/events/hutchfallfest.

  • Trail & Treat 3K/5K

    Race through the beautiful trails of Sand Hills State Park at the Trail & Treat 5K/3K. Packet pick-up for both distances begins at 8 a.m. on race morning. Sand Hills State Park is located at 4207 E. 56th Ave. in Hutchinson. Participants will receive an informational email the week of the event with additional announcements and information.
    5K Race Details:
    Fee is $25 for all ages, with registration available online (click link below) and in-person at 17 E. 1st. Participants in the 5K race will be officially chip-timed and eligible for age-group awards, with official timing from Timer Guys. All participants will receive a race shirt. The 5K race begins at 9 a.m.
    3K Details:
    Fee is $15 for all ages, with registration available online (click link below) and in-person at 17 E. 1st. The 3K event is family-friendly and not timed. All participants will receive a race shirt. The 3K begins at 9:30 a.m.
