We have put together a very short timeline of this historic park but we encourage you to read “A History of Baseball in Hutchinson KS” by Jim Swint for the full story.
In 1948 the city manager called for a new park to be built Carey Park hence Carey Park Ball diamond was born. On May 15, 1962, a resolution was read to the city commission by commissioner Hod Humiston requesting that the Carey Park diamond be named in honor of W.M. “Bud” Detter. “Bud” Detter, a lifelong Reno County resident. Bud served as the first to do radio broadcasts of sporting events in Hutchinson. Through the 1960’s the American Legion contracted with the city to lease and operate Bud Detter Field. On November 24, 1970, the beginning of another glorious chapter in Hutchinson baseball history began when the city commission voted 4-1 to transfer the lease of Bud Detter Field to Hutchinson Baseball Enterprises and its president, local businessman, Nelson Hobart.
Nelson Hobart in 1980, did a major Bud Detter facelift. New steel light towers replaced the wooden poles, restrooms, dressing rooms, and concessions were remodeled, 90 feet of new bleachers were added along with a spacious press box and a new scoreboard. In 1985, Nelson Hobart gave up his Hutchinson Broncs affiliation and his lease of Bud Detter Field. In 1990 the field was renovated again.
